Antonio Yglesias Vargas was born in San José, Costa Rica. He studied at La Salle. He traveled to Italy and studied Direction of Theater and Direction of Cinema and TV in the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia de Roma. Back in Costa Rica, he created the Theater Group with which it created his work "the Ants" and "Teófilo Amadeo", of Dr. W. Reuben, which marked a new stage in the Costa Rican University Theater.
He created Cinemateca de Costa Rica and is the Director de Artes y Letras del Ministerio de Cultura. He directs the cultural magazine Tertulia. He has also collaborated with the foundation of the Centro de Cine del Ministerio de Cultura and made twenty documentaries of sociological investigation as publisher, scriptwriter and director. He also created the company of distribution and cinematographic production Isthmus Film and the Sala Garbo, San José. He produces and directs several documentaries for Costa Rica and Tellux-Provobis, German producer and distributor.
He films in Mexico, Panama, Ecuador and Central America. He won Oso de Oro in the International Festival of Moscow with the documentary "Nicaragua, Patria Libre o Morir" and Bronze medal in the Festival of New York for editing the documentary "The filibusteros".
He taught a Cinematographic Appreciation course in the University of Costa Rica, from 1970 to 1995. In 2005 he was in charge of the course of Direction in the Veritas University. He was Peter Lillienthal’s first assistant in "La Insurrección" and directed "The Segua". He directed several plays in Costa Rica; his work "Pinocho Rey" was presented in Mexico and gained the recognition of Best Group of the Year in 1975. In 1983 he founded the company Ariel Productions and Hangar Films, where advertising and documentary works are produced.
Now he works as an independent producer. In the contest promoted by the Costa Rican National Theatre Co. in 1996, won first place with "Lelia and the time". In 2001, his documentary "Growing Together” produced for the IMAS, gained Cabo Blanco de la X Muestra de Cine y Video Prize on Gender. In 2005 the weekly program produces for Teletica Channel 7 "Miracles", a series of pictures on people who help another people, transmitted on Sunday’s evening schedule. Now he works actively in the field of the Cinematographic Production, with emphasis in Direction, Edition and Script, as much in the advertising field (twenty years of experience like Director and Publisher), as in the production of informative, documentary material and in television programs.
Recent advertising campaigns: ten pieces for the group "For Costa Rica", on the subject of the TLC (series of interviews to people in different areas from the country (Student, worker of Sardimar (Puntarenas), Companies of Transports, Translator, Exporter of flowers, greater lady, etc.); Tico bingo, "Cumpleaños", Laica Campaign; Canapam Campaign (Adult greater); DVD for the Novartis Group, Documentary for the Goque Group, etc.
